I never thought that such a perfect masterpiece could be produced from a 24-minute anime episode. While the episode begins suspiciously and even pessimistically, at the end we realize that we were witnessing an amazing love.
It honestly hurt so damn bad seeing the beginning of that beautiful bond but having first been exposed to their tragic fates and their end. Written so beautifully. They deserved so much better, you hope that time in between they were able to enjoy their time together before it all went horribly wrong.

At first the doctor's story was so sad when I watched it almost made me cry but when they showed the button and I figured out who they actually are the tears won't stop falling.....

When he lifts up the side of his hair by the water, that is meant to be further symbolism to show us who he becomes. Everything in the final episodes reveals that the school plot line is in the past before the apocalypse based on hidden details revealed throughout the course. The reason Maru and Tokio look similar is because Maru is one of her children, specifically the one that was taken away with a circle on the foot… The name Maru actually translates to circle. At the end of the show you literally see Shiro and Mimihime approach a complete city, signaling it is before everything went bad
